Last year I released the UNIVERSAL WESTERN ATTRACTIONS compilation CD of (mostly) Bay Area bands and songwriters that I’ve played music with over the years. Almost everyone on the compilation has played in the others band at some point so there’s a lot of overlapping in the recordings. Quite a few of the songs were produced by me including the tracks by Dirdy Birdy, Jeffrey Manson, Honey.Moon.Tree, Collin Ludlow-Matson, Honeycomb & Sleepy Todd. For The Blank Tapes contribution, I recorded an alternate chilled out CCR version of “Smoke & Mirrors” from Daydreams (2007). Collin came up with the name of the album and Dominic Santos shot the cover. We only pressed 1000 of these CDs and they went fast! You can now download the album for free, no email required.

The Blank Tapes “Folktified” at McCabe’s

Folktified: a modern variation with a folk foundation.

Westside. McCabe’s guitar shop has primo shows and players within the confines of its walls. Legendary greats of Blues, Folk, and Jazz play through when in town. This night proved to be as special as the rest as two local Indie and one San Fran band electrified the stage…

The Blank Tapes from San Francisco, tripped down the easier, gentle side of the musical landscape. With a tight, compact, hippy sound and a pop style arrangements, this five piece band played soothing tunes, like lying around in a daisy filled field. Sweet harmonies, intricate guitar picking, and a happy vibe filled the room as the crowd soaked it all in.
Their last song “Somebody, Somewhere” provided a flashback to the song “Mellow Yellow” which explained the feeling of this stellar set. It has a reminder of a kinder, gentler, music, but keeps it short and to the point which kept the crowd on it’s toes and flowed well with th eother bands performances…

Everyone is vibing off each others energy, love, and support. It is a rarity and something truly beautiful to witness and join in on.

Home Away From Home [Album Review]

The Blank Tapes‘ Matt Adams wrote his new album Home Away From Home, as he puts it, in a van in probably half of the states in America. For that, it is named appropriately. It, too, is packed with garage-worthy tinkering that extends from folk to pop to experimental psychedelic. It’s an array that bodes well for the San Francisco native, and it’s one that’s definitely worth a pair of ears. Namely — yours.

“Flashing Before Your Eyes” is one of many standouts, this one blending hints of psychedelic rock with folk-pop sensibilities. And he drops in some experimental traits while he’s at it. Home Away From Home opens with “Black Hair”, a track with an epic, powerful rock riff and hazy, warbled vocals. He follows that with a smooth bass-line and carefree vocals in “We Can Do What We Want To”.

The thing is, Home Away From Home is full of this, from the southern-influence “Driving Out Of My Mind” to the mysterious “Don’t Mind” to the soft folk closer “Place In My Heart.” And for that, Adams seems like he’d be a pretty amazing individual to meet.
